Lessons in Storytelling from the 161st Edinburgh International Photography Exhibition

Walking into the premises of the Edinburgh Photographic Society at 68 Great King Street, you immediately feel the weight of history. This exhibition has been running since 1861—that’s 161 years of photographers pushing the boundaries of what a single frame can communicate.

I didn’t just visit this year to admire the work; I went there to find out what separates a "good" photo from one that is truly "world-class." To do that, I sat down with three expert judges and a featured participant to deconstruct the DNA of a winning image.

What the Judges Are Really Looking For

One of the biggest takeaways from my interviews was that technical perfection is just the baseline. In 2026, anyone can take a sharp, well-exposed photo. The judges at the 161st Exhibition were looking for something deeper: Visual Impact and Narrative.

They aren't just looking at your composition; they are looking for your voice. Does the image ask a question? Does it make the viewer feel the cold of a Highland morning or the tension in a street portrait? If you want to level up, stop focusing solely on your settings and start focusing on the feeling you want to provoke.

Transitioning from Photographer to Storyteller

I also had the privilege of speaking with one of this year's featured creators. We discussed a pivotal shift every creator must make: moving from simply "taking" photos to "telling" stories.

A storyteller doesn't just show up and click. They research, they wait for the light that matches the mood, and they understand the "why" behind the shot. Whether it’s an award-winning monochrome landscape or a vibrant colour study, the goal is to create a moment that stands the test of time.

Capturing the Camaro ZL1 through the Lens of a Drone

There’s something unique about the roar of a 6.2L V8 supercharged engine echoing through the Polish countryside. While on holiday, I couldn't resist the chance to put the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in front of my drone's lens - specifically, the DJI drone.

Automotive videography is about more than just following a car; it’s about capturing the energy and the intent of the machine.

Why the Drone is the Ultimate Chase Tool

For this short film, I wanted to lean into the drone's agility to mimic the ZL1's aggressive stance. By using low-altitude tracking shots and high-speed orbits, I was able to showcase the car's aerodynamic lines in a way that ground-based cameras simply can't replicate.

In 2026, storytelling in the automotive world has shifted. It’s no longer just about the specs; it’s about the feeling of being in the driver's seat.

Sound On: The Immersive Experience

I’ve spent time ensuring the audio design matches the visual weight of the Camaro. The way the supercharger whines as the drone dives into the frame creates a sensory experience that is meant to be felt, not just seen.

Technical Nuance & Creative Vision

Filming with a DJI drone while travelling requires a balance of technical precision and creative spontaneity. I had to account for lighting, wind, and the car's speed to ensure every frame told a consistent story of power and freedom. Whether I am working on a professional commercial set or capturing a passion project on holiday, my goal remains the same: providing incredible value through high-impact visual storytelling.

There are few structures in the world as instantly recognisable as the Forth Bridge. This UNESCO World Heritage site isn't just a feat of Victorian engineering; it is a symbol of Scotland’s connection and resilience. When I took my drone out to the Firth of Forth to capture this red giant, I wasn't just looking for a "cool shot" - I was looking to tell the story of its scale and the rhythm of the rail network.

An Immersive Perspective

In my latest video, I wanted to go beyond the visual. To truly experience the Forth Bridge, you have to hear it. The mechanical hum of the trains crossing the Firth of Forth, combined with the coastal wind, creates an atmosphere that you just can't get from a standard photograph.

This video is a tribute to the incredible individuals who came together for Doddie’s Grand Slam Cycle Challenge. This journey tested their limits but united them in a shared goal—to raise funds and awareness for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and the fight against motor neurone disease (MND). It captures the grit, determination, and struggles the team faced cycling from Edinburgh to Rome across nearly 2,000 miles (3000 kilometres) of road, all for a cause close to the hearts of many.

From the historic Murrayfield Stadium in Scotland to the final stop at the Stadio Olimpico in Italy, the team rode through the very heart of rugby:

• Aviva Stadium (Ireland)

• Principality Stadium (Wales)

• Twickenham Stadium (England)

• Stade de France (France)

• Stadio Olimpico (Italy)

Along the way, they made a memorable stop in Monaco, where royal representatives greeted them at the Palace of Monaco. Their journey, marked by exhaustion and countless physical challenges, was fueled by the unwavering support of the rugby community and their own determination to complete this inspiring mission.
